I just signed up to walk the March for Babies Walk on April 25, exactly one year and one day after Jack was born. As all of you know, he was born 9 weeks premature and only weighed 3 lbs 2 ounces. He spent time on a ventilator, CPAP, an nasal cannula, and had almost daily drops in his heart rate. He and spent 7 grueling weeks in the NICU fighting for his life and overcoming these issues. It was an extraordinarily difficult time for all of us.

He’s now 11 months old and weighs 21 lbs, and is incredibly healthy. We are all exceptionally lucky, but babies should not have to go through the hell that is caused by being born too early. One day, all babies will be born healthy. But until then…

• support all-important research offering preventions and solutions for babies born too soon or with birth defects
• educate women on things they can do to increase their chances of having a healthy baby
• provide comfort and information to families with a newborn in intensive care
• push for newborn screening and health insurance for all pregnant women and children
